Helpful Bird Tips and Information

Before you purchase a bird be sure to read the information below. Plan out where you will place your bird and how you will care for it.

Your Bird's Cage

Make sure the cage is large enough for your bird to open and flap its wings without bumping into anything in the cage.

If you have multiple birds be sure to have a cage large enough to house them. This will vary by size, number, and type of bird.

Be sure to have plenty of toys for your bird otherwise they will go crazy with boredom. Toys vary as to the type and size of bird.

Use a cover to train your bird. When your bird is being loud or disobedient, cover the cage to remove him from the 'flock' until the bird calms down.

Cover the cage to protect your bird from drafts and so it feels safe when sleeping.

Your Bird's Cage Placement

Your bird is part of your family. Make sure your bird's cage is in a place where there is a lot of family activity such as the living room.

Never place the cage in front of an open window. They are drafty and could overhead from the sun.

Test for drafts from windows or ceiling fans. Birds can tolerate low temperatures but never a draft.

The cage should never be in a room where people smoke. Birds have sensitive lungs and are prone to respiratory infections.

The cage should never be in the kitchen. Non-stick cookware like Teflon releases a TOXIC gas when overheated.

The cage should not be in a room where fabric fresheners. Remove the cage and bird from the room and return them once it has dried.

The cage should not be in a room where aerosols are used. Birds have sensitive lungs. Types of aerosols include hairsprays, strong cleaners, perfumes, room deodorizers, and spray paint.

The cage should never be near items your bird can chew on. These can include blinds, picture frames, curtains, window facings, etc.

Bird Maintenance

Clean the bottom of the cage daily.

Remove all soft food after a couple of hours.

Wash food and water cups daily to prevent bacteria growth.

Place water cups above perches to prevent accidental contamination.

Disinfect the cage weekly with a MILD vinegar solution. 1 Part vinegar to 10 parts water.

Scrub perches weekly. Allow the perches to dry completely before placing them back in the cage. 2 sets of perches makes cleaning easier.
